English

The English curriculum at Birralee International School Trondheim is intended to teach students to read with pleasure and understanding and to write with clarity and confidence. In studying English, children develop skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. It enables them to express themselves creatively and imaginatively and to communicate with others. The study of English will also help the children understand how language works. Literature in English is rich and influential and we encourage the students to become enthusiastic readers.

The English curriculum reflects our belief in the value of reading widely and in a variety of literary forms both traditional and innovative. Children are encouraged to read for pleasure on a daily basis. Each classroom is stocked with books and students also have access to the school library. Parents and students take part in our home-school reading program.

We believe that writing improves with practice and constant attention to basic skills. Students are encouraged to use their imagination and to develop their reasoning as they learn to read and write with increasing enthusiasm and proficiency.

Creative and informative writing take many forms. Younger children dictate stories and interpretations of their various activities, while older children write stories, news articles, essays, research reports, poems, plays and summaries. Direct instruction in handwriting, spelling, vocabulary, grammar is provided.
