Detailed information about Year 2 - Year 8
The children in Year 2 to Year 8 are grouped
according to age. We have no mixed class. This means that each age group has its own class and its own class teacher. We endeavour to provide a warm, secure and friendly
environment where the caring attitudes of the teachers and their
assistants meet the differing
needs of the international child.
We provide activities to stimulate the continued development of the children's oral and written language, encouraging them to develop differing creative writing styles. Norwegian language skills are taught at the appropriate level. The children receive just as many Norwegian lessons as in a Norwegian school.
Students of foreign origin who do not speak Norwegian and where both parents are non- Norwegian are entitled to mother tongue teaching organised through Trondheim City Council.
The school will provide more information and also make all necessary arrangements. There is no extra charge for Mother tongue tuition. Trondheim City Council will also provide a free bus card for children who live more than 4 kilometres away from school (2 kilometres for Year 2).
The children are encouraged to read extensively and are introduced to a wide variety of quality international literature, both modern and classical. The children are expected to express their views clearly and concisely and to become critically aware of what they are reading. They are encouraged to take pride in their work and to present it for each other as often as possible, either at assemblies or at class presentations. A play or concert is usually performed each year. A modified cursive style of handwriting is taught, however children entering the school with good handwriting will be encouraged to keep their own style.
At Birralee, we encourage the children to develop their interest and curiosity in the world around them, helping them to appreciate and understand cultures and encouraging them to become environmentally aware. Geography, History, Art, Drama, Technology, Home Economics and Music are often taught through cross-curricular topics. An emphasis is placed on Scandinavian Geography and History to encourage children to become aware of their Scandinavian environment. International differences are kept in mind, especially when teaching practical mathematics.
Computer lessons are given on a regular basis and the children are encouraged to use computers as a tool to aid their day-to-day work. The children have regular Physical Education lessons in a well-equipped gymnasium. They are encouraged to develop their physical skills and cultivate good attitudes towards team games.
We encourage the children to enjoy learning, be inquisitive, ask questions and to master the skills needed to find the answer. The children from Year 3 to Year 8 can also become part of the student council.
