APPLICATION FOR LEAVE
If you wish to remove your child from school during term time you must:
• apply to the Principal in writing as far in advance as possible for leaves;
• ensure that your child completes work set by his/her teachers during the absence;
• understand that fees must be paid while the child is absent;
• note that the Principal reserves the right to refuse the application;
• note that it may take up to three weeks before your application is processed.
Friskoleloven §3-13 allows schools to grant a leave for a maximum of two weeks (10 school days). This means that the school is not authorised to grant a leave for more than two weeks and must decline all applications for leaves that are longer than two weeks.
If parents/guardians want to take their child out of school for more than 10 school days, the parents/guardians will become responsible for their child’s education, ref. Opplæringsloven § 2-13: the rules regarding private homeschooling. The school might then also decide to remove the student from roll and parents will need to re-apply for a place at Birralee.
Neither the School nor the County Governor (the appeal body) can grant a student a leave for more than two weeks.
If parents chose to leave, either without having applied, or without having been granted permission, the student will get unauthorised absence for the period the student is absent from school.
A leave will not be granted:
During the preparation of tests, national tests and exams.
On the day of tests, national test and exams.
A leave is generally not granted for vacation, training camps or when a student already has an unauthorized leave.
A leave might be granted:
Special celebrations or events (family, political)
Participation in competitive events at a high level (sport, cultural)
A leave will be granted:
Students, who are member of a different religious community other than the Norwegian Church, are entitled to a leave during their religious holiday if they apply for it.
We encourage families to not take holidays during term time. This can be very disruptive to a child’s education. We undertake to publish holiday dates and other dates when the school is closed well in advance so that holidays can be planned.
