School Start 2020-2021

Welcome Back to School!

We are excited to welcome both returning and new students and their families to Birralee this autumn. Everyone in the school has worked hard the last few weeks to prepare for this school year. The teachers have prepared the classrooms and have lots planned for the coming days and weeks.

To ensure that we have a smooth start, there is a lot of practical information that we need to share with you. A lot of the information relates to the infection control measures that we have put in place in light of the current amber status in Norway.

First Day of School: Monday 17th August 2020

We will start the new school year in the park next to the school.

We kindly ask students to arrive at the following times on Monday next week:

08:30 Year 6 - Year 10

08:45 Year 2 - Year 5

09:00 Year 1

Students will join their teacher and peers in the park. This will be clearly signed. We kindly ask everybody to practise social distancing when arriving at the park. Due to infection control measures in place, parents can unfortunately not join their children on the school playground or in the school building.

A Reminder about Lunch and Equipment

Your child will need a packed lunch and a drink. Please do not include sweets or fizzy drinks. Please note that students will not be allowed to leave the premises during school hours.

On the first day your child will need indoor shoes and appropriate outdoor clothing for the weather.

Healthy School

We would like to remind parents that we are a healthy school. We therefore kindly ask parents not to send any sweets or cakes to school.

Children will be recognised in school on their birthday by their teacher and classmates. However, we kindly ask you to not send in any birthday treats.

The Birralee After School Programme (ASP) provides care, supervision and activities outside the regular school hours for children from Year 1 to Year 4 in a caring environment. ASP is located in the classrooms on the first floor. In addition, the playground, music room and other rooms are used. During the Covid-19 pandemic, ASP will mostly take place outside.

Covid-19 Infection Control Measures

Important infection control measures during Covid-19 (Amber-level)

  • Students should not attend school or ASP if they have mild respiratory symptoms and should remain at home until they have been symptom free for 1 day.

  • Students who are in close contact with a member of a household with a confirmed case of covid-19 must be in isolation/quarantined. It is the health service that decides who should be in isolation and how long for.

  • Increased focus on hygiene and cleaning during School and ASP

  • No parents or other visitors allowed on school premises. Parents collect and drop their children off at the school gate.

School Day

Due to infection control measures (reducing contacts in the school) we will continue the new school year with slightly altered start and end times of the school day.

Entry and Exit Points

All classes have assigned entry and exit points to the school playground and the school building. We kindly ask Years 1, 3, 4, 7 and 10 to use the entrance at Bispegata and Years 2, 5, 6, 8 and 9 to use the "back entrance" at Sverres Gata.

Quarantine upon arrival from abroad Please note that anyone arriving in Norway from abroad shall be in quarantine for 10 days, with the exception of specified countries in Europe with sufficiently low transmission (please see the latest map and table on the website of the Norwegian Health Authorities  The areas that are exempt from quarantine duty may change rapidly, so please make sure to check before coming to school. Please contact the school office - - if your family/child has been abroad during the last 10 days.
