Welcome Back to School!
We are excited to welcome both returning and new students and their families to Birralee this autumn. Everyone in the school has worked hard the last few weeks to prepare for this school year. The teachers have prepared the classrooms and have lots planned for the coming days and weeks.
To ensure that we have a smooth start, there is a lot of practical information that we need to share with you. A lot of the information relates to the infection control measures that we have put in place in light of the current amber status in Norway.
First Day of School: Monday 17th August 2020
We will start the new school year in the park next to the school.
We kindly ask students to arrive at the following times on Monday next week:
08:30 Year 6 - Year 10
08:45 Year 2 - Year 5
09:00 Year 1
Students will join their teacher and peers in the park. This will be clearly signed. We kindly ask everybody to practise social distancing when arriving at the park. Due to infection control measures in place, parents can unfortunately not join their children on the school playground or in the school building.

Communication School – Home
The school will send out regular newsletters. Other information will be sent out by the teachers through email and Seesaw, the school's learning and communication platform. Parents will receive an invitation to join Seesaw by email. School information and activity calendars can also be found on the school’s website www.birralee.no.
Parents Meetings and Parent Conferences
We will be holding two annual Curriculum Meetings for parents. The first one will be in September. This will allow you to (digitally) meet all the teachers and to hear about the curriculum and our plans for the year. Parents are offered two parent-teacher conferences during the year, one in the autumn and one in the spring.
A Reminder about Lunch and Equipment
Your child will need a packed lunch and a drink. Please do not include sweets or fizzy drinks. Please note that students will not be allowed to leave the premises during school hours.
On the first day your child will need indoor shoes and appropriate outdoor clothing for the weather.
We would like to remind parents that we are a healthy school. We therefore kindly ask parents not to send any sweets or cakes to school.
Children will be recognised in school on their birthday by their teacher and classmates. However, we kindly ask you to not send in any birthday treats.
School Milk The school provides a milk service for our students. Parents can sign up online for the school year: https://www.skolelyst.no/
After School Programme (ASP)
The Birralee After School Programme (ASP) provides care, supervision and activities outside the regular school hours for children from Year 1 to Year 4 in a caring environment. ASP is located in the classrooms on the first floor. In addition, the playground, music room and other rooms are used. During the Covid-19 pandemic, ASP will mostly take place outside.
ASP is open from Monday to Friday from 07.30 to 16.30. ASP is open every school day and during most school holidays.
Parents also have the possibility to buy an ASP Clip Card (10x) for 1.300 NOK. The ASP Clip Card allows children to attend ASP for 10 afternoons on regular school days (14:30-16:30). More information and the application form can be found here: www.birralee.no/afterschool
After School Clubs
Information about our After School Clubs will follow next week.
Mobile phones and electronic equipment
Mobile phones cannot be used during the school days and must be switched off. Parents can contact their child through the school office if need be.
Please note that the school is not responsible for students’ personal equipment.
Transportation Year 1 students who are living more than 2 km walking distance from school can apply for a free bus card. For children in Years 2-10 the required distance is 4 km. Please note that bus cards cannot be used during school holidays or if you change your address. More information and our application form can be found here: http://birralee.no/school/useful-forms
If your child already has a free bus school bus card, the card will be electronically updated from Monday 17th August. You do not need to submit a new application. If your child has lost their bus card please contact firstname.lastname@example.org
If you have any questions that have not been answered in this letter, please call or email the School office (email@example.com) and we will do our best to help you.
I am very much looking forward to seeing you at the beginning of the new school year.
Yours faithfully, Elin J. Hitchman Principal

Covid-19 Infection Control Measures
Important infection control measures during Covid-19 (Amber-level)
Students should not attend school or ASP if they have mild respiratory symptoms and should remain at home until they have been symptom free for 1 day.
Students who are in close contact with a member of a household with a confirmed case of covid-19 must be in isolation/quarantined. It is the health service that decides who should be in isolation and how long for.
Increased focus on hygiene and cleaning during School and ASP
No parents or other visitors allowed on school premises. Parents collect and drop their children off at the school gate.
Due to infection control measures (reducing contacts in the school) we will continue the new school year with slightly altered start and end times of the school day.
Entry and Exit Points
All classes have assigned entry and exit points to the school playground and the school building. We kindly ask Years 1, 3, 4, 7 and 10 to use the entrance at Bispegata and Years 2, 5, 6, 8 and 9 to use the "back entrance" at Sverres Gata.
Quarantine upon arrival from abroad Please note that anyone arriving in Norway from abroad shall be in quarantine for 10 days, with the exception of specified countries in Europe with sufficiently low transmission (please see the latest map and table on the website of the Norwegian Health Authorities www.fhi.no/en). The areas that are exempt from quarantine duty may change rapidly, so please make sure to check before coming to school. Please contact the school office - email@example.com - if your family/child has been abroad during the last 10 days.
