Banquet at the Castle (and more highlights)

Year 9 were, as winners of the UngeAbel competition, invited to take part in Abel Week in Oslo earlier this week.

Their visit was filled with highlights:

  • Holmboe prize ceremony at the Oslo katedralskole, the school where Niels Henrik Abel went to and was mentored by his then teacher Bernt Michael Holmboe. The Holmboe prize is one awarded to a mathematics teacher in Norway.

  • Abel prize ceremony at the University Aula. The Abel prize is The Abel Prize is named after Niels Henrik Abel, Norway’s greatest mathematician throughout the ages. The prize honours and celebrates great mathematical achievement in the world. As there is no Nobel prize in mathematics it is considered the most prestigious award in this field.

  • Lunch and speeches at the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, where the laureates and mathematicians were invited to speak to young mathematics competition winners from around Europe, including ours.

  • Banquet at the Akershut castle, celebratory dinner hosted by the Norwegian state in honour of the Abel winner. Our students were mentioned and applauded during Sigrun Aasland's speech (Minister of Research and Higher Education).
