Last school year, Year 7 practiced and improved their swimming skills at the indoor pool at Pirbadet. However, 93% of all drowning accidents in Norway happen outside. In order for the students to be water competent, students should also practice in an outdoor setting.
Last week, Year 7 got this exposure at a nearby lake during their PE lesson. Students practiced jumping into cold water (about 15 degrees) with their clothes on and swimming ashore. Mr Heise and Mrs Murphy also talked with the students about self-rescue and lifesaving. The class also talked about how to avoid accidents and how to recognize when others are in trouble.
