What an Icy Fjord Teaches That a Textbook Can’t

Each December, our students take part in an invigorating outdoor swim in the fjord—embracing one of Norway’s most powerful classrooms: nature itself.
Cold-water swimming helps students understand how the body reacts to sudden cold and how to remain calm under pressure. It also builds resilience, self-awareness, and mental strength.
An important learning objective is water safety. Many drowning incidents occur not because people plan to swim in a nice warm pool, but because they accidentally fall into cold water without preparation.
Through guided exposure, students learn controlled breathing, cold-shock management, and safe decision-making—skills that are directly transferable to real-life scenarios they may encounter in their lives.
The activity also strengthens teamwork and community. Students prepare together, follow strict safety routines, and support one another through the challenge. Stepping outside comfort zones as a group builds trust, confidence, and a strong sense of belonging.

The pupils have every reason to be proud. Both of what they accomplished today, and of their teachers, who go above and beyond to develop out kids as sensible and resilient citizens.
I was watching from a distance and it was cold enough being on dry land in the fog. Whatever they're paid, I'm convinced it's not enough 😅
